The person who surrendered Fiona and I have been emailing a bit, just chatting, and she wants to send a donation, which I feel a little awkward about. I’m not a 501(c)(3), so it wouldn’t be tax deductible, which probably isn’t that big a deal to her, but my Paypal isn’t even in the name of the rescue. First of all I literally can’t sign up for an account as a charity without being a registered non-profit (I went through this process for the shelter), and also I thought it would look terrible when using my Paypal to buy things.

I dunno, I guess if I just say ‘Since I pay for all of the rescue expenses out of pocket the easiest way to handle donations is through my Paypal’ that’s probably okay, but it still makes me feel weird.

Aw yeah, I emailed Subterranean Press to ask if they plan on putting out an edition of Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s The Prisoner of Heaven and they said they’re planning on it being ready in the first half of next year. Fuck yeah. Seriously, their books are beautiful. I have their editions of The Shadow of the Window and The Angel’s Game. Look at how gorgeous this shit is.

Something that drives me insane and that happens all the time is when people bring their animal in, has an exam done, and only then mentions that they have no money. And I don’t mean ‘has considerable financial concerns’, I mean literally doesn’t have a single dollar. They have no cash, no credit card, no checks, nothing. So you suggest CareCredit and they get declined. You ask if they have friends or family who can help them and they say no. So what are they doing at the fucking vet getting services then? You don’t go to the grocery store, fill up your cart, then go to the check out and say ‘Oops, I forgot my wallet’. And then we’re in the position of looking like terrible people when we say we can’t do anything for them, but we’ve already lost money by doing the exam for free and we’ve had to lay people recently, we really can’t subsidize care.

When an animal is obviously curable we have been known to eat pretty large costs, but tonight’s was just ridiculous. It was a rabbit with probable uterine carcinoma and the owner didn’t have a penny. I’ve had three rabbits with uterine carcinoma. Two died of mets within six months and the third died of probable osteosarc. There’s no light at the end of the tunnel for rabbits with cancer. You can throw money at them all you want but you’re not going to buy them more than a few months.
